WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
It is used to express and ask about past intentions and plans that changed, we use:
+ Subject + was/were
going to + verb in base form.- subject + was/were NOT going to + verb in base form.
? was/were + subject + going to + verb in base form + ?
EXAMPLES:
- I was going to get up early tomorrow.(but the alarm did not sound)
- You were going to study to be a lawyer. (but you changed your mind)
- He wasn't going to get up early tomorrow. (but he has to do it)
- Were they going to eat out tonight? (yes)
You can also use would (the past of will) + a base form, but only in a noun clause following verbs such as thought, believed or said.
EXAMPLES:

- They believed that Helena would get married with Oscar (but the marry was canceled)
