To express feelings and beliefs about past actions and events, we use THE PERFECT MODALS:
- SHOULD.
- MAY/MIGHT.
- COULD.
- WOULD.
- MUST.
- SHOULD.

- MUST.
WHAT IT IS USED FOR? / EXAMPLES
• Regrets or judgments:
should have + past participle
1.I should have studied
languages. (But unfortunately,
I didn’t.)
2. She shouldn’t have gone to the party. (But unfortunately, she did.)
• Possibility:
may have / might have + past participle
1.she may(OR might) have been a good teacher. But she wasn’t.
2. He may(ORmight) not have been able to make a living as a musician.
• Ability (OR possibility):
could have + past participle
1.You could have done better on
your exam
2.she couldn’t has gone to that dangerous place unaccompanied.
• Certainty:
would have + past participle
1.He should has gone to Nicaragua.
he would has loved it.
1.It’s good he broke up with Anne.
They wouldn’t have been happy together.
• Conclusions:
must have + past participle
1.You should have studied harder for that exam.
2.She shouldn't have left home without her parents' permission.
