UNIT 3: LESSON 1: INVENTIONS AND DISCOVERIES.

Hello, in this lesson we are going to learn the ways to describe manufactured products and we will talk about the second conditional.

So let's get started...

DESCRIBING MANUFACTURE PRODUCTS.

FOR EXAMPLE:

  • Tom's new car has all the latest safety technology. Everyone says it's the safest car on the market. It was expensive, but he feels good because he knows that his family is driving in a car that's  top-of-the-line when it comes to safety.

  • Our son is Only 9 years old, so we don't need to buy him a cutting-edge tablet. We're looking for a low-priced, basic machine. That will be fine to get him started.

  • This scanner uses a brand-new, innovative technology. My friends and I have never seen anything like it.

  • Glasses that get darker when you put them on in bright sunlight? They've been around for a long time, haven't they? They're certainly not a novel product.

THE SECOND CONDITIONAL - THE UNREAL CONDITIONAL...

Is used to talk about a hypothetical situation and its possible result.

In this conditional we can refer to a time that can be now or any time, and to a situation that is not real.

STRUCTURE.
To approach the structure of the second conditional in English, you must first remember that conditionals are always divided into clauses. Conditional type 2 sentences always have two clauses:

IF CLAUSE:
The conditional clause is formed with the word if, subject and verb in the simple past. Structure:

If + subject + verb in simple past tense.

RESULT CLAUSE:
The main a clause will always use the verb would or could and the present conditional. Structure:

Subject + would + infinitive verb without the to.

EXAMPLES:
  • If you were smarter you would not be here. (Si fueras más listo, no estarías aquí).
  • I would buy the TV if I had money. (Compraría la TV si tuviese el dinero).
  • If we travelled there, we would get lost. (Si viajamos allí, nos perderíamos).
  • If it weren’t this sunny, I would not be thirsty. (Si no hiciese tanto calor, no tendría tanta sed).
  • If you could have one superpower, which would it be? (Si pudieras tener un superpoder, ¿cuál sería?)
  • If you only ate one food forever, which would it be? (Si sólo comieras un alimento para siempre, ¿cuál sería?)
  • If you lived to be 300, how would your life be different? (Si vivieras hasta los 300 años, ¿cómo sería tu vida?)
A: I just got a new car.B: No kidding! What kind?A: The Alva 500. The 500 model is top-of-the-line. I thought I’d treat myself.B: Well, congratulations! If I had the money, I’d get a new car myself.
